The Southern Rata is an iconic bright red flowering native tree found in both Islands. It has disappeared from some areas as it is a favourite food of the possum.
It's classic spear-shaped bright green leaves with distinctive fine veination are a reminder of the preciousness of our native forest heritage. As the leaves age they often become bright red in colour which is reflected in this multi-hued necklace. These necklace springs from a love of these beautiful trees.
Each silver leaf is hand cut from plate metal, shaped with files, sanded, given a satin finish and patterned with a scribe. The copper leaves undergo a similar process but are polished, heated, and immersed in a waterbath to give the permanent red colour. Please note that if ordering a product that includes gold plated leaves extra time is required to make and send these products. Any combination of the three leaves can be made into a necklace, please feel free to ask for a unique one to be made.
